Integrated Waste Services - LFG Project

Project Information:
Integrated Waste Services - LFG Project is a landfill gas capture project located in the industrial suburb of Wingfield, approximately 12 kilometers north of the Adelaide CBD in South Australia. The project is situated at the Wingfield Waste and Recycling Centre, a major waste management hub for the region. Registered in March 2017, the project operates within an industrial zone surrounded by other logistics and manufacturing facilities, rather than traditional agricultural land.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology incentivizes the installation and operation of gas collection systems in landfills to capture methane, a potent greenhouse gas generated by decomposing organic waste. By capturing this gas and combusting it (either through flaring or electricity generation), the project converts methane into carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower global warming potential. The project activities specifically involve the installation of a new gas collection system to manage gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste.
Environmentally, the Wingfield area lies on the Adelaide Plains, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The average annual rainfall is approximately 400-500mm. While the natural soil composition of the region typically consists of clay and alluvial sediments, the project site itself is a highly engineered environment featuring capped landfill cells and anthropogenic fill materials designed to manage leachate and gas migration.
A notable aspect of this project is its connection to the broader energy grid. The captured gas is supplied to onsite power stations (Wingfield I and II), operated by Energy Developments Limited (EDL), which convert the waste gas into renewable electricity. Corporate records indicate a shift in the project's administration; while Veolia Environmental Services was historically a participant, recent variations in 2023 reflect a consolidation of the proponent role under IWS Group Asset Co Pty Ltd, a family-operated South Australian company. The project has successfully generated abatement, with contracts completed as of August 2024.
