Central Coast No.3 CMWM Project (Stage 1) (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Central Coast No.3 CMWM Project (Stage 1) is a now-revoked industrial emission reduction project located in the locality of Jilliby, approximately 7km west of Wyong on the New South Wales Central Coast. Registered in March 2017 by Our Energy Group Pty Limited, the project was short-lived and was voluntarily revoked just over a year later in April 2018. The project coordinates pinpoint the site to the Buttonderry Waste Management Facility off Hue Hue Road, an active waste management and recycling centre.

The project was registered under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Coal Mine Waste Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the capture and combustion of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere from underground coal mines. The specific activity described for this project involved installing displacement electricity production devices to convert this gas into energy.

The region surrounding Jilliby and the Wyong valleys is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with high rainfall, typically exceeding 1,100mm annually. The local landscape features a mix of rural acreage, state forests, and grazing land, with soils predominantly consisting of alluvial clays and loams in the valleys, transitioning to sandstone-derived soils on the ridges.

An interesting anomaly exists regarding this project's registration details. While the methodology specifies "Coal Mine Waste Gas," the coordinates strictly align with the Buttonderry Waste Management Facility, a site dedicated to municipal waste rather than coal mining. It is common for landfills to host carbon projects, but these are typically registered under Landfill Gas methodologies. The revocation under section 30 (voluntary revocation) suggests the proponent may have withdrawn the project to correct a methodology mismatch or administrative error.
