Mullagalah II Regeneration Project

Project Information:

Mullagalah II Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located at the 'Mullagalah' station, approximately 50km southeast of Bourke in the Orana region of New South Wales. The project was registered on March 23, 2017, and covers a project area of 5,253 hectares.

The Human-Induced Regeneration methodology involves land management changes designed to allow the regeneration of native forests on land where vegetation growth was previously suppressed. In this specific project, activities include managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing and controlling feral animals (likely goats, which are prevalent in the region) to reduce pressure on emerging vegetation. The goal is to establish a permanent even-aged native forest from in-situ seed sources.

The project is situated in the Bourke Shire Council area, a region characterized by semi-arid conditions and vast rangelands primarily used for grazing cattle and sheep. The environment typically features Mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands and shrublands. The soils in this area are generally described as red earths, sandy loams, or clay soils, which are typical of the Cobar Peneplain and Mulga Lands bioregions.

Notable aspects of this project include its status as a subsequent stage to the original 'Mullagalah Regeneration Project' (registered in 2015), indicating a phased expansion of carbon farming activities on the property. The project successfully completed its Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC787990) with the Australian Government in October 2020. Administrative records show the participant structure has evolved, with Kurrajong Partners Pty Ltd being added in 2020 and subsequently removed in August 2025, leaving Michael and Tanya Marshman as the sole proponents.
