Hunter No. 2 CMWM New Flaring Project

Hunter No. 2 CMWM New Flaring Project is a coal mine waste gas project located in the Hunter Valley region, approximately 20km west of Singleton in New South Wales. It was registered on 8 November 2016 and covers an unknown area size.

Coal mine waste gas projects involve installing and operating new flaring or electricity production devices to capture and combust the methane component of waste gas originating from coal mine drainage or ventilation systems. Combusting the captured methane converts it into carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower global warming potential.

The Hunter Valley area is highly known for its extensive coal mining operations, as well as cattle grazing, agriculture, and viticulture. The region typically experiences a sub-humid climate with moderate rainfall, and the soils are generally a mix of alluvial deposits along the riverbanks with podzolic and clay soils in the surrounding hills.

This project was set up by Our Energy Group Pty Limited to install and operate a new flaring device to capture and combust methane directly from the coal mine. The project originally secured a carbon abatement contract (CAC838267) in November 2016, but this contract was ultimately terminated or lapsed in November 2019.
