Cooneybar Station Forest Regeneration Project (Revoked)

Project Information:
Cooneybar Station Forest Regeneration Project (Revoked) is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located at Cooneybar Station approximately 75km north-east of Cobar in NSW. It was registered in November 2016 and covers 18,608.07 ha.
Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve establishing permanent even-aged native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources (including rootstock and lignotubers). These projects take place on land where native vegetation regrowth has been suppressed for at least 10 years. Standard requirements dictate a change in land management to relieve suppression pressure so native trees can reach forest cover, defined as a minimum height of 2 metres and at least 20% crown cover. For this project, the core activity was the active management of the timing and extent of livestock grazing.
The Cobar region is known for extensive pastoralism operations, specifically cattle and sheep grazing. The area is considered semi-arid with low and variable rainfall, and soils are generally red earths, sandy loams, and clay loams.
This project was initially facilitated by Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd and secured a carbon abatement contract in November 2016 to deliver 269,925 ACCUs to the Commonwealth. However, the contract lapsed or was terminated early in February 2018 with zero units delivered. The proponent company, Cooneybar Station Pty Limited, was subsequently deregistered and closed in late 2023, and the project was officially revoked under section 32 of the CFI Rule on May 13, 2026.
