Project Information:
DAC-2016-03 is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth project located approximately 56km north-west of Quilpie in the Channel Country region of South West Queensland. It was registered in November 2016 and covers a project area of 3,927.39 hectares. The Quilpie region is widely known for its pastoral leases, predominantly supporting broadacre sheep and cattle grazing operations.
Native Forest from Managed Regrowth projects involve stopping the mechanical or chemical destruction, or suppression, of vegetation to allow native trees to naturally recover. Standard requirements for this methodology dictate that the regenerating vegetation must have the potential to reach forest cover, which is typically defined as achieving a canopy cover of at least 20 percent and trees reaching a minimum height of two metres. This specific project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers, on land that was subject to at least one comprehensive clearing event for pastoral use.
The region surrounding the project is characterised by a hot, semi-arid climate with very low average annual rainfall, generally around 350mm. Soils in the area are predominantly red Kandosols (massive earths), cracking clays, and sandy loams. These soil types are typical of the Channel Country and Queensland's mulga lands, adapted to support native scrub and sparse pastures amidst the arid conditions.
The project's proponent, Devine Agribusiness Carbon Pty Ltd, was founded by a team with extensive professional backgrounds as rural valuers, agribusiness consultants, and graziers. The company was established to help integrate carbon revenues with active, sustainable grazing practices across regional Queensland. Due to its success in setting up over 30 operational carbon projects, Devine Agribusiness Carbon was acquired by GreenCollar, Australia’s largest environmental markets investor, in July 2021 to further reward farmers for their land stewardship and expand carbon market opportunities.
