Kilcoy Pastoral Company Limited Emissions Reduction Project (Revoked)

ERF104465

Project Information:

Kilcoy Pastoral Company Limited Emissions Reduction Project (Revoked) was an industrial energy efficiency project located at the Kilcoy Global Foods meat processing facility, approximately 2km east of the township of Kilcoy and 100km northwest of Brisbane, Queensland. Registered in October 2016, the project operated for just over three years before being voluntarily revoked in February 2020.

The project operated under the Industrial Electricity and Fuel Efficiency methodology. This method credits activities that improve energy efficiency in industrial settings, such as upgrading boilers, installing more efficient motors, or switching from high-emissions fuels (like coal) to lower-emission alternatives. Specific activities at the Kilcoy site included boiler upgrades, fuel switching, and the capture and re-use of waste heat. These measures were designed to lower the emissions intensity of the abattoir's energy-hungry rendering and processing operations.

The Kilcoy region is situated in the Somerset Region of South East Queensland, an area characterized by a sub-tropical climate with high rainfall and fertile soils, often supporting intensive grazing and agriculture. The landscape surrounding the facility is dominated by rolling hills and pastureland, appropriate for the region's strong cattle industry.

Although this specific project (ERF104465) was revoked, it appears to have been an early step in a much larger sustainability strategy for the site owner. Kilcoy Global Foods has since pursued aggressive decarbonization targets, recently achieving carbon-neutral certification under the Climate Active standard. The facility has continued to invest in bioenergy, including the installation of a major biomass boiler to replace coal-fired units and covered anaerobic lagoons to capture methane for electricity generation. The revocation under "Section 30" indicates the proponent voluntarily withdrew the project, potentially to transition to these broader certification schemes or newer technologies.
