Project Information:

Bongers Greycliffe-Jambin Wetland (Revoked) is a soil carbon project located near the rural localities of Greycliffe and Jambin, approximately 30km north of Biloela in Central Queensland. It was registered in May 2017 and covers 727.48 ha. The project is situated within the Banana Shire, a region well known for broadacre cropping and cattle grazing operations.

Soil carbon projects involve altering agricultural management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil, which is then measured over time. For this specific project, the registered activities included altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing; applying nutrients to address material deficiencies; converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no tillage; establishing or rejuvenating pastures by seeding; and using mechanical means to redistribute soil through the profile.

The surrounding Central Queensland environment features a sub-tropical to semi-arid climate, characterised by high summer temperatures, distinct wet summer seasons, and dry winters. Soils in these regional agricultural zones often consist of fertile cracking clays (vertosols), which are highly prized for maintaining soil moisture during crop and pasture production.

Interestingly, this project underwent several administrative changes. In June 2021, variations were made to amend the project area boundaries and update its methodology from the 2014 grazing systems determination to the newer 2018 measurement of soil carbon sequestration in agricultural systems determination. The project was ultimately revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule on 5 August 2025.
