Bongers Greycliffe-Jambin Wetland (Revoked)

Project Information:
Bongers Greycliffe-Jambin Wetland (Revoked) is a soil carbon project located near Jambin, approximately 20km north of the major town of Biloela in Queensland's Banana Shire. It was registered in May 2017 and covers a project area of 727.48 hectares.
Projects under the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology involve building soil carbon stocks through eligible management activities, which must be verified through rigorous physical soil sampling. To sequester carbon, this project implemented a combination of agricultural practices. These included altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing, applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material soil deficiencies, and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices. Additionally, the project focused on establishing and rejuvenating pastures by seeding and using mechanical means to redistribute soil through the profile.
The Banana Shire and surrounding Callide Valley region are heavily utilized for agricultural purposes, primarily beef cattle grazing and broadacre cropping (such as sorghum, wheat, and cotton). The local environment experiences a sub-tropical, semi-arid climate with summer-dominant rainfall, while the soils are typically composed of highly fertile brigalow clays and alluvial loams.
Interestingly, the proponent updated the project's methodology in June 2021, moving from the older 2014 grazing systems determination to the broader 2018 agricultural systems rules, and amended the project area shortly after. Prior to ultimately being revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule in August 2025, the project gained international visibility when it was featured as a recognized case study in a 2020 European Commission report analyzing the operationalisation of global carbon farming initiatives.
