MRA Aggregated Landfill Gas projects

MRA Aggregated Landfill Gas projects is an aggregated landfill gas project located across multiple municipal and private landfill facilities Nationwide in Australia. It was registered on 11 April 2016. Because it is a nationally aggregated project spanning various undisclosed sites, a singular project area and specific coordinates are not applicable or publicly disclosed.

Landfill gas projects involve the installation of a new gas collection system, typically consisting of extraction wells and a piping network inserted into a landfill cell. This system captures methane-rich gas generated by the decomposition of organic waste. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the methodology requires the captured methane to be combusted, usually via flaring or an electricity-generating engine, converting the potent greenhouse gas into less harmful carbon dioxide. Standard requirements also dictate that the system must strictly monitor and account for gas generated from both legacy waste (accepted before July 2012) and non-legacy waste.

Because this project aggregates multiple sites across the country, environmental conditions such as rainfall classifications and soil types vary considerably depending on the location of each facility. However, engineered landfills in Australia are characteristically situated on, or constructed with, low-permeability soils such as heavy clays to prevent toxic leachate from percolating into surrounding groundwater systems. The regional land use adjacent to these sites typically consists of municipal infrastructure, peri-urban industrial zones, or resource recovery centres.

An interesting note about this project is that it is managed by Mike Ritchie and Associates Pty Ltd (trading as MRA Consulting Group), a prominent waste management and resource recovery consultancy in Australia. In April 2016, the project was awarded a carbon abatement contract (CAC657049) committing a fixed delivery of 56,500 ACCUs to the Commonwealth. As of early 2026, the project has successfully sold over 23,600 ACCUs to the Commonwealth, while releasing around 17,300 through fixed delivery exit arrangements. Additionally, on 13 September 2023, the project underwent a formal methodology variation to transition its operation under the updated Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015 (Compilation No. 1).
