Carbon Estate - Creating a Better Climate - Stage 3 (Revoked)

Carbon Estate - Creating a Better Climate - Stage 3 (Revoked) is a Reforestation and Afforestation project located in the Riverina region of NSW, approximately 40km south of Hay. It was registered in April 2016 and covers 5.27 Ha.

Reforestation and Afforestation 2.0 projects involve establishing permanent plantings of trees on land that was previously used for agricultural purposes. Standard requirements dictate that the plantings must have the potential to reach a minimum height of two metres and a canopy cover of at least 20%, requiring a targeted stocking density to ensure these forest thresholds are met.

The Riverina area is widely known for sheep and cattle grazing alongside grain cropping operations. The region is considered semi-arid with low-to-medium rainfall (averaging 350-400mm annually), and soils are generally heavy clays and red-brown earths.

This project specifically focused on establishing permanent plantings of Eucalyptus polybractea, commonly known as Blue Mallee. This hardy native tree is well-regarded for its robust carbon sequestration and traditional use in eucalyptus oil production. The project was managed by Carbon Estate Pty Ltd with CO2 Australia acting as the agent. Interestingly, earlier stages of the Carbon Estate project portfolio were developed in partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Land Council to revegetate degraded agricultural land on properties such as Barooga Karrai. This specific Stage 3 project was officially revoked on July 12, 2023, under section 30 of the CFI Rule, which allows for the voluntary or administrative cancellation of a carbon project.
