Carbon Estate - Creating a Better Climate - Stage 3 (Revoked)

Carbon Estate - Creating a Better Climate - Stage 3 (Revoked) was a reforestation project located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, approximately 40km southeast of the town of Hay. Registered in April 2016, the project covered a small area of just 5.27 hectares. The project was undertaken by Carbon Estate Pty Ltd, with CO2 Australia Pty Ltd acting as a participant, likely in an administrative or service provider capacity.

The project operated under the Reforestation and Afforestation 2.0 methodology. This method requires establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least five years prior to the project's commencement. Specifically, this project focused on planting Eucalyptus polybractea (Blue Mallee), a species native to the semi-arid interior of southeastern Australia. Blue Mallee is notable for its high concentration of essential oils and its ability to sequester carbon in its lignotubers (roots) and multiple stems.

The surrounding Riverina region is characterized by flat plains traditionally used for grazing sheep and cattle, as well as irrigated cropping where water is available. The environment is classified as semi-arid, typically receiving between 350mm and 450mm of rainfall annually. The soils in this specific area are generally red earths, clays, or sandy loams, which support salt-tolerant and drought-hardy vegetation like the Mallee species planted.

On July 12, 2023, the project was revoked under Section 30 of the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Rule. Section 30 refers to a voluntary revocation request by the project proponent. Given the notably small size of the project area (5.27ha) compared to other stages in the Carbon Estate portfolio, it is likely this specific parcel was consolidated, deemed economically unviable on its own, or cancelled to streamline operations.
