Wesfarmers Energy Efficiency Commercial Appliance Project (Revoked)
ERF103373
Project Information:
Wesfarmers Energy Efficiency Commercial Appliance Project (Revoked) was an aggregated energy efficiency project designed to operate across a portfolio of commercial sites throughout Australia, rather than being anchored to a single geographical location. Registered in April 2016, the project aimed to reduce emissions within Wesfarmers' extensive retail and industrial property network, which at the time included major chains such as Coles, Bunnings, Kmart, and Target. Due to its multi-site nature, the project area is listed as "Unknown," and it cannot be pinned to a specific town or region; however, the activities took place within Class 5 (offices), 6 (shops/retail), and 7b (warehouses) buildings found in urban and suburban centres nationwide.
The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, High Efficiency Commercial Appliances) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the reduction in electricity usage achieved by installing high-efficiency equipment, specifically air-conditioners, liquid-chilling packages, and refrigerated display cabinets, compared to standard baseline models. Participants earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by calculating the abatement generated from these electrical savings over a seven-year crediting period.
As this project was focused on the built environment, traditional environmental metrics such as rainfall classification and soil type are not applicable. Instead, the "environment" consisted of climate-controlled commercial spaces where refrigeration and air conditioning are critical for operations.
An interesting aspect of this project was the involvement of City Facilities Management (Aus) Pty Ltd as a participant. City Facilities Management is a long-term strategic partner of Coles (a Wesfarmers subsidiary at the time), specializing in refrigeration and facilities maintenance. This partnership suggests the project was likely a coordinated effort to upgrade aging refrigeration and cooling assets across the supermarket fleet. The project was voluntarily revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule in March 2018, less than two years after registration, and public records indicate it did not issue any ACCUs prior to revocation.
