Central Coast No. 2 - CMWM Flaring Project (Revoked)
ERF103297
Project Information:
Central Coast No. 2 - CMWM Flaring Project (Revoked) was an industrial fugitive emissions project located near Wakefield, approximately 25km west of Newcastle in the Lake Macquarie region of New South Wales. The project was registered in April 2016 but was subsequently revoked in September 2019. Unlike land-based projects, this initiative did not cover a specific hectare area but was centered on infrastructure at a coal mine site, likely associated with the West Wallsend Colliery operations found at the specified coordinates.
The project operated under the Coal Mine Waste Gas (CMWG) methodology, which credits the destruction of fugitive methane released during coal mining. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and this method involves capturing the gas from coal seams and combusting it via a flaring device to convert it into carbon dioxide, which has a lower global warming potential. The project specifically aimed to install and operate a new flaring device to manage these emissions.
The Wakefield and Killingworth region is characterized by a mix of historical coal mining activity, state conservation areas, and rural-residential land use. The environment is classified as a warm temperate coastal zone with high rainfall, typically exceeding 1000mm annually. The soils in this region are generally derived from the Newcastle Coal Measures, consisting of sedimentary clays, yellow podzolic soils, and loams that support the surrounding dry sclerophyll forests and grazing pastures.
This project appears to have been part of a broader portfolio by the proponent, Our Energy Group Pty Limited, which included a sister "Power Generation" project (ERF103271) at the same location that was also revoked. The project was contracted under the government's auction scheme in April 2017, but the contract lapsed, and the project was voluntarily revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule.
