Werai Park Forest Regeneration
ERF103091
Project Information:
Werai Park Forest Regeneration is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located at Werai Park station, approximately 60km southwest of Eulo in South West Queensland. It was registered in March 2016 and covers 19,065.33 ha.
Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) projects involve establishing permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers. These projects require a change in land management practices; for this project, standard activities include the cessation of mechanical or chemical destruction of regrowth, as well as the humane management of feral animals and the timing and extent of livestock grazing.
The Eulo area and the broader Paroo Shire are situated within the Mulga Lands bioregion, an area widely known for cattle and sheep grazing operations. The region features a semi-arid climate with low average annual rainfall, typically ranging from 200mm to 400mm. Soils in this environment are predominantly infertile sandy red earths, red kandosols, and localized areas of cracking clays.
This project is situated on land that was previously cleared of vegetation and where regrowth was suppressed for at least 10 years before the project commenced. In January 2019, project proponent Ian Gordon Keech relinquished 661 Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) to correct an unintentional error regarding the project. Outside of carbon farming, the proponents are active in the local community and have hosted events such as "Music in the Mulga" and caravan musters on their Werai Park and Wandilla cattle stations.
