Werai Park Forest Regeneration
ERF103091
Project Information:
Werai Park Forest Regeneration is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located at Werai Park station, approximately 60 kilometres southwest of Eulo in South West Queensland. Registered in March 2016, the project covers a substantial area of 19,065 hectares within the Paroo Shire. The property is situated in the Mulga Lands bioregion, an area characterized by semi-arid conditions, low rainfall, and extensive red earth soils.
The region is traditionally utilized for grazing cattle and sheep, a practice consistent with the project proponents, Ian and Sheryl Keech, who have historically operated the land as a cattle station. In 2017, the property even hosted a "Mini Muster" event for caravan owners, highlighting its dual use for agriculture and agritourism. The project activities focus on regenerating native forest by managing grazing pressure and controlling feral animals, allowing vegetation to recover on land where regrowth had been suppressed for at least 10 years prior.
This project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which awards carbon credits for the sequestration of carbon in regenerating native forests. A notable administrative event occurred in January 2019, when the proponent voluntarily relinquished 661 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to rectify an unintentional reporting error. It is important to distinguish this project from the "Werai Forest" in New South Wales, which is a separate wetland forest system near Deniliquin; the Werai Park project is strictly a dryland regeneration initiative in Queensland.
