Kimba Station (Revoked)

Project Information:

Kimba Station (Revoked) was a Savanna Fire Management project located at Kimba Station, approximately 100km west of the township of Laura on Queensland's Cape York Peninsula. The project was registered in December 2015 and covered an area of 32,739 hectares. The station itself is a pastoral lease situated in the "Dixie" locality, a remote region primarily utilised for cattle grazing and conservation activities.

Savanna Fire Management projects involve the strategic burning of savanna areas during the early dry season (cooler, moister conditions) to reduce the fuel load. This practice limits the intensity and spread of late dry season wildfires, thereby reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions. As a project in the high rainfall zone (receiving over 1000mm annually), the vegetation typically consists of tropical eucalypt woodlands with a grassy understorey. The soils in this central part of the Cape York Peninsula are predominantly sandy loams and red earths (Kandosols), which support the native tussock grasses essential for this fire management methodology.

The project was revoked on 15 May 2017 under Section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011, which indicates a voluntary revocation at the request of the project proponent. Clean Energy Regulator records show that zero Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) were issued to the project prior to its revocation. The proponent, Country Carbon Pty. Ltd., later entered into an enforceable undertaking with the Regulator in 2020 regarding other operational matters, though this occurred after the Kimba Station project had already been revoked.
