Driver Advisory System (Revoked)

Project Information:

Driver Advisory System (Revoked) was a transport efficiency project undertaken by V/Line Pty Ltd, operating across the regional rail network in Victoria, Australia. Registered in December 2015, the project sought to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from V/Line's fleet of diesel trains. Unlike area-based carbon projects, this initiative did not occupy a specific land parcel but applied to the proponent's mobile assets, specifically the regional passenger trains connecting Melbourne to major hubs such as Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Gippsland.

The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Land and Sea Transport) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits emissions reductions achieved by lowering the emissions intensity of transport services, typically calculated as emissions per kilometre or per tonne-kilometre. The specific activity involved the implementation of Driver Advisory Systems (DAS). These systems are in-cab technologies that provide real-time data to train drivers, advising them on optimal driving speeds and coasting strategies to minimize fuel consumption while maintaining schedule adherence.

As a network-wide project, the environmental context spans the diverse landscapes of Victoria. The rail corridors traverse regions ranging from the high-rainfall, temperate forests of Gippsland and the Otways to the semi-arid, cropping and grazing plains of the Mallee and Wimmera in the north-west. The soils across this operational area vary significantly, including heavy clays in the volcanic western plains and sandy loams in the north. The project was voluntarily revoked in March 2020, likely as V/Line transitioned its sustainability focus toward a broader "Emissions Reduction Roadmap" targeting net zero by 2050, as detailed in subsequent corporate reporting.
