Kangaroo Waste Diversion Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

Kangaroo Waste Diversion Project (Revoked) was an alternative waste treatment (AWT) project located near Monarto, approximately 15km west of Murray Bridge in South Australia. The project was registered on September 18, 2015, but was subsequently revoked in August 2018. The specific coordinates place the project site in a rural locality known for agriculture and industrial activities, situated within the Murraylands region.

The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Alternative Waste Treatment) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology involves diverting mixed solid waste (MSW) that would otherwise be sent to a landfill, where it would decompose and release methane, and instead processing it through alternative means. In this specific case, the project description indicates the construction of a new facility to process waste using enclosed composting technology.

The Monarto and Murray Bridge region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and cool winters; average rainfall is approximately 350mm to 500mm annually. The soils in this area are typically calcareous sandy loams and shallow soils over calcrete, which are common in the Murraylands agricultural districts. Land use in the immediate vicinity of the coordinates includes grazing, cropping, and specialized industrial facilities, such as the major composting and soil processing operations known to exist in the Monarto area.
