Redundant Furnace Tie-Out Project at Geelong Refinery (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Redundant Furnace Tie-Out Project at Geelong Refinery (Revoked) is an industrial energy efficiency project located at the Viva Energy Refinery in Corio, approximately 8km north of the Geelong CBD in Victoria. Registered on January 5, 2016, the project operated within the refinery's 120-hectare facility until its revocation in May 2020.

The project was registered under the Industrial Electricity and Fuel Efficiency method, which incentivizes upgrades to existing industrial equipment, such as heating, ventilation, air cooling (HVAC), and furnace systems, to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, this project involved "tying out" (decommissioning or bypassing) redundant furnaces and optimizing waste heat capture to improve overall fuel efficiency at the plant.

Geographically, the refinery sits on the shores of Corio Bay. The broader Geelong region is characterized by the Western Volcanic Plains, featuring basalt-derived clay soils and a temperate climate. Uniquely, Geelong lies in a rain shadow created by the Otway Ranges, resulting in a relatively low average annual rainfall of approximately 525mm. While the immediate vicinity is a heavy industrial zone, the surrounding region supports mixed land uses including grazing, cropping, and viticulture.

The project was voluntarily revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule in 2020. This section typically applies when a proponent requests revocation, often because the project is no longer active, has been consolidated, or is no longer seeking carbon credits for the specific activity.
