Bindaree Carbon Project 2015

Project Information:

Bindaree Carbon Project 2015 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the locality of Ridgelands, approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. Registered on October 7, 2015, the project covers a project area of 1,408 hectares within the Rockhampton Local Government Area. The region is a major hub for beef cattle production, characterized by vast grazing properties and open woodlands typical of the Fitzroy Basin.

The project operates under the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology (2018 version), having transitioned from an earlier grazing method. This methodology requires the proponent to measure baseline soil carbon levels and implement management activities, such as altering stocking rates, grazing duration, or intensity, to encourage the sequestration of carbon into the soil. As a "measured" project, Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) are issued based on physical soil sampling results that demonstrate a net increase in soil carbon stocks over time, rather than modelled estimates.

Environmentally, the project sits within a sub-tropical climate zone marked by distinct wet summers and dry winters. The area typically receives variable rainfall, heavily influenced by the northern monsoon season. The landscape in the Fitzroy Basin often features diverse soil types, ranging from fertile alluvial loams near watercourses to cracking clay Vertosols and Chromosols in the grazing uplands, which are well-suited for holding carbon when managed effectively.

A notable aspect of this project is the involvement of Dr. Thakur Bhattarai, a recognized expert in carbon farming and soil health from Central Queensland University and Elders. His participation suggests a strong focus on scientific rigour and best-practice grazing management. The project is managed by GBP Qld Pty Ltd as the Trustee for the Alexander Family Trust.
