Qantas Airways Limited Emissions Reduction Fund Program (Revoked)

Project Information:

Qantas Airways Limited Emissions Reduction Fund Program (Revoked) was a transport efficiency project operating nationwide across the Qantas aviation network. Registered on September 3, 2015, the project sought to reduce emissions across the airline's fleet rather than being situated at a specific physical site. As a result, standard location markers such as "nearest major town" or regional land use definitions do not apply, as the project area encompassed the entirety of the proponent's flight operations within Australia.

The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Aviation) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits activities that reduce the emissions intensity of aviation transport services. Standard requirements involve implementing changes such as modifying aircraft aerodynamics (e.g., installing winglets), switching to lower-emission energy sources like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or altering operational practices to improve fuel efficiency. Unlike land-sector projects, there are no stocking density or soil requirements; instead, the focus is on rigorous data monitoring of fuel burn per kilometre or tonne-kilometre of payload.

Because this project is industrial in nature, environmental conditions such as rainfall zones and soil types are not applicable. The project was revoked on January 20, 2022, under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. This section specifically refers to the "voluntary revocation of declaration... where no units have been issued," indicating that Qantas voluntarily withdrew the project before any Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) were generated. Public records confirm that zero ACCUs were issued to this project during its seven-year registration. Qantas has since shifted its decarbonisation strategy toward purchasing high-integrity offsets and direct investment in the Sustainable Aviation Fuel industry.
