Pedler Creek Landfill Gas Power Station Upgrade Project (Revoked)
ERF101744
Project Information:
The Pedler Creek Landfill Gas Power Station Upgrade Project (Revoked) was a waste sector project located at the Southern Region Waste Resource Authority (SRWRA) landfill facility in Seaford Heights, South Australia. Situated approximately 35 kilometers south of the Adelaide CBD, the site sits on the urban fringe, bordered by the residential suburb of Seaford to the west and the renowned McLaren Vale wine region to the east. The project was registered in September 2015 and was subsequently revoked in July 2022.
This project operated under the 'Capture and Combustion of Methane in Landfill Gas from Legacy Waste: Upgrade projects' methodology. This method credits the abatement of methane generated by waste deposited prior to July 2012 (legacy waste). Specifically, it incentivizes the installation of new infrastructure, such as upgraded generation units or expanded collection wells, to capture gas that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. The captured methane is combusted to generate electricity, converting it into less potent carbon dioxide and producing renewable energy for the grid.
The Seaford Heights area experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 500-600mm. The landscape is a mix of peri-urban development and agricultural land, with soils in the surrounding region typically consisting of red-brown earths and clay loams suitable for viticulture.
A notable aspect of this project's history involves its regulatory context. In 2018, the proponent, EDL LFG (SA) Pty Ltd, entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the Clean Energy Regulator, which was successfully completed in 2020. The project was voluntarily revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule in 2022. Public records suggest the gas capture activities at this site have continued under a successor project (ERF109627), which transitioned to the 2021 Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas methodology.
