Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Coorong Lower Lakes Murray Mouth Ramsar Aggregation (Revoked)
ERF101620
Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Coorong Lower Lakes Murray Mouth Ramsar Aggregation (Revoked) was an environmental planting project situated across the Coorong and Lower Lakes region of South Australia, extending north-east towards the Riverland. The project area of approximately 1,536 hectares appears to have been an aggregation of multiple properties, with coordinates indicating locations near Meningie (close to the Coorong coastline) and inland south of Loxton. Registered in August 2015, the project was managed by Australian Integrated Carbon Financial Services Pty Ltd (AI Carbon) before being voluntarily revoked in July 2018.
The project operated under the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) methodology for "Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool." This methodology requires establishing permanent plantings of native tree species, such as Mallee eucalypts or Melaleucas indigenous to the local area, on land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years. The primary goal of such projects is to sequester carbon while enhancing biodiversity, typically requiring a stocking density of at least 200 stems per hectare to achieve forest cover status.
Environmentally, the region is characterized by a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The landscape around the Coorong and Lower Lakes is ecologically significant, featuring Ramsar-listed wetlands, sandy limestone soils, and coastal dune systems, while the inland Riverland areas are dominated by sandy loams used for dryland cropping and grazing. The inclusion of "Ramsar" in the project title highlights its intent to support the high conservation value of the adjacent wetland systems, which serve as critical habitats for migratory birds.
The project was revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates a voluntary revocation by the proponent. This often occurs when a project is restructured, transferred to a newer methodology, or deemed commercially unviable in its original configuration. Public records suggest the project permanence period had not yet commenced at the time of revocation, implying it may not have reached the stage of issuing Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) before its cancellation.
