Biodiverse Carbon Conservation SAW4 (Revoked)

Project Information:

Biodiverse Carbon Conservation SAW4 (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located in the suburb of Upper Sturt, approximately 15km southeast of the Adelaide CBD in South Australia. Registered in August 2015, the project covered a small area of 3.58 hectares. The project was situated within the Adelaide Hills region, an area characterized by a mix of conservation parks, peri-urban residential holdings, and water catchment lands.

The project operated under the Carbon Farming (Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool) Methodology Determination 2012. This methodology requires the establishment of permanent plantings of native tree species on land that has been cleared of forest for at least five years. The goal is to sequester carbon in the growing biomass of the trees. Given the specific location in the Mount Lofty Ranges, the environmental conditions are favorable for such plantings, featuring high annual rainfall (typically exceeding 1000mm) and soils that are generally acidic sandy loams or texture-contrast soils with clay subsoils.

The project was voluntarily revoked in July 2018 under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. The "SAW" designation in the project name, combined with the proponent's history on similar projects (such as "Biodiverse Carbon Conservation SAW1," which was transferred to the South Australian Water Corporation), suggests this project may have been located on SA Water land. The extremely small size of the project (3.58ha) likely made it economically unviable to maintain as a standalone offset project due to ongoing audit and reporting costs, leading to its voluntary cancellation.
