Biodiverse Carbon Conservation SAW2 (Revoked)
ERF101598
Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon Conservation SAW2 (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located near Myponga, approximately 60km south of Adelaide in South Australia. The project area, covering 115.64 hectares, sits within the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula, a region traditionally defined by dairy farming and grazing due to its reliable climate. Registered in August 2015, the project was established on land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years, with the aim of restoring native vegetation.
The project operated under the "Carbon Farming (Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool) Methodology Determination 2012." This methodology involves planting a mix of native tree species to establish permanent forest cover, calculated to sequester carbon over time. The 2012 determination utilized the Reforestation Modelling Tool (RMT) to estimate abatement, requiring specific stocking densities and species mixes to ensure the plantings mimic a natural forest structure typical of the local area.
Environmentally, the Myponga region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with relatively high rainfall compared to the rest of the state, supporting the lush pastures required for the local dairy industry. The soils in this area are typically sandy loams overlying mottled clay subsoils, which are well-suited to supporting the native vegetation reintroduced by the project.
An interesting aspect of this project is its revocation in July 2018 under section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates a voluntary revocation by the proponent. The project code "SAW2" and its proximity to the Myponga Reservoir suggest a likely association with SA Water (South Australian Water Corporation). A sibling project, "SAW1," was transferred to SA Water and successfully transitioned to a newer methodology, suggesting that SAW2 may have been consolidated or voluntarily withdrawn to optimize the broader revegetation strategy in the catchment area.
