Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Dungrove (Revoked)

Project Information:

Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Dungrove (Revoked) is a carbon sequestration project located in the locality of Dungrove, approximately 18km northwest of the historic township of Bothwell in Tasmania's Central Highlands. Registered in July 2015 by Australian Integrated Carbon Financial Services Pty Ltd, the project covered a land area of 30.2 hectares. The project was voluntarily revoked under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011 in August 2017, meaning it is no longer an active carbon credit generating activity.

The project operated under the Carbon Farming (Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool) Methodology Determination 2012. This methodology involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that has been clear of forest for at least five years. The goal is to sequester carbon by restoring native vegetation, with carbon abatement estimates calculated using the Reforestation Modelling Tool (RMT) rather than direct field measurements.

The Dungrove area is situated within the Central Highlands region, an area characterized by mixed grazing (sheep and cattle) and forestry operations. The landscape typically features cool temperate conditions with dolerite-based soils, which are common to the Tasmanian highlands and support productive pasture when managed well. Rainfall in this region can be variable, often necessitating irrigation for intensive grazing operations.

Dungrove Station, the property associated with the locality, is a well-known historic grazing operation run by the Downie family since the 1830s. The property is recognized for its commitment to sustainable land management, including integrating trees and irrigation to support livestock production. The revocation of this specific carbon project suggests a change in strategy or land management focus by the proponents or landholders shortly after registration.
