Mundaring (Revoked)
ERF101570
Project Information:
Mundaring (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located in the Shire of Mundaring, approximately 35 kilometers east of Perth in Western Australia. The project covers a small area of 15.12 hectares and was originally registered in July 2015. While the project is situated within the Darling Range, a region historically known for forestry and water catchment, the specific site involves the reforestation of land previously used for agricultural purposes, such as grazing, prior to the project's commencement.
The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings, FullCAM) Methodology. This method involves establishing permanent native forests by planting a mix of local species, typically at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover (often requiring at least 200 stems per hectare). The "environmental planting" designation indicates the primary goal was restoring native vegetation rather than establishing a harvestable plantation.
Environmentally, the Mundaring region sits within the Jarrah Forest bioregion, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with high winter rainfall (averaging over 1000mm annually in the scarp). The soils in this area are predominantly lateritic gravels and clays, which support dry sclerophyll forests dominated by Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and Marri (Corymbia calophylla) trees. These conditions are generally favorable for reforestation efforts compared to the drier wheatbelt regions further inland.
This project was voluntarily revoked in August 2021 under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. The proponent, Carbon Positive Australia Ltd (formerly the Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund), is a charity focused on ecosystem restoration. It is common for such organizations to voluntarily revoke smaller projects like this from the official ACCU scheme to reduce administrative audit costs while keeping the trees in the ground for their ecological benefit, or to account for the carbon abatement through internal voluntary mechanisms rather than government-regulated credits.
