Kellerberrin (Revoked)

Project Information:

Kellerberrin (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located in the Shire of Kellerberrin, approximately 200km east of Perth in the Western Australian Wheatbelt. It was registered in July 2015 and covers 64.83ha. The surrounding regional land is predominantly used for broadacre agriculture, historically focused on dryland cropping (such as wheat) and sheep grazing.

Environmental planting projects under the ACCU scheme involve establishing permanent, mixed-species plantings of native trees on land that has been cleared of forest cover for at least five years. To meet standard methodology requirements, these plantings must be established at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover, typically requiring a minimum stocking density of at least 200 stems per hectare to reach a 20% crown cover and a height of two meters.

The Wheatbelt environment around Kellerberrin experiences a semi-arid, Mediterranean climate characterised by hot, dry summers and a low-to-medium winter-dominant rainfall. Soils in this region are generally composed of sandy loams and duplex soils, which can often be prone to water repellency or salinity depending on historical land management.

This project was managed by Regenerate Australia Ltd, a national charity formerly known as Carbon Positive Australia, which focuses on rebuilding biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and restoring degraded landscapes across the country. An interesting note regarding this specific site is that despite the goal to establish permanent native plantings for a 100-year permanence period, the project was officially revoked under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act on 18 September 2017.
