Project Information:

Boodarie Waste to Energy and Materials Recovery Facility (Revoked) is an Alternative waste treatment project located at Boodarie, approximately 15 to 20 kilometres southwest of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It was registered in September 2015 and covers an unknown area size. The Boodarie area is characterised by heavy industrial use within the Boodarie Strategic Industrial Area, alongside traditional cattle grazing operations on the historic Boodarie pastoral lease. The surrounding Pilbara region features a semi-arid to arid climate with highly variable rainfall, often influenced by summer cyclones, and its soils are generally comprised of red sandy loams, alluvial sands, and clay.

Alternative waste treatment projects involve diverting mixed solid waste that would otherwise be destined for landfill and processing it through approved treatment facilities. Under the applicable 2015 methodology determination, projects can generate carbon credits by processing waste using enclosed composting, anaerobic digestion, or by manufacturing a process engineered fuel, which ultimately avoids the release of methane from decomposing organic waste in landfills.

The Boodarie project was proposed by New Energy Corporation Pty Ltd, with Corporate Carbon Advisory Pty Ltd acting as an agent. The facility was designed to divert mixed commercial, industrial, and household waste from Port Hedland landfills to produce a combustible fuel substitute known as syngas. It was expected to process up to 255,000 tonnes of waste annually to fuel a gasification plant capable of generating up to 18.5 megawatts of electricity for the North West Interconnected System. Despite receiving environmental approval from the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority for its state-of-the-art design, the carbon project was officially revoked on 26 June 2020 under section 30 of the CFI Rule.
