Glengeera Forest Regeneration Project

Project Information:

Glengeera Forest Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Bourke local government area, approximately 35km north of the town of Bourke in outback New South Wales. It was registered in August 2015 and covers an extensive area of 19,334.86 hectares.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve regenerating permanent native forests by changing land management practices to encourage the regrowth of native vegetation. The standard requirements for this methodology dictate that the regenerating forest must reach at least 20% crown cover and a height of at least 2 meters.

The Bourke region where the project is situated is a semi-arid environment characterized by low and highly variable rainfall, averaging around 350-400mm annually. The local soils vary across the landscape but typically consist of red loams, sandy rises, and patches of grey or chocolate clay soils suitable for pasture. Because of these conditions, the dominant land use in the area is broadacre pastoral grazing, primarily for sheep, cattle, and goats.

This project aims to establish permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers. The project activities take place on land that was previously cleared of vegetation and where regrowth had been continuously suppressed for at least 10 years prior to commencement. To achieve this, the proponents have committed to ceasing the mechanical and chemical destruction of regrowth, alongside managing feral animals in a humane manner.

The project is run by the proponent KARBILL PTY LTD, with Climate Friendly Pty Ltd acting as an agent. In September 2015, a variation was made to the project to remove some areas originally listed in the project boundary. Additionally, the project operates under an active Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC102267) established in November 2015, which has successfully delivered over 130,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to the Commonwealth. Notably, the Clean Energy Regulator records historic enforceable undertakings related to the project's agents, including Climate Friendly Pty Ltd and Australian Carbon Traders Pty Ltd, between 2016 and 2018.
