Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Nosworthy (Revoked)
ERF101484
Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Nosworthy (Revoked) was a large-scale environmental planting project located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Specifically, the project site was situated approximately 20km southeast of the locality of Sheringa and roughly 100km northwest of the regional city of Port Lincoln. Registered in July 2015, the project covered a significant area of 16,369 hectares within the Elliston and Lower Eyre Peninsula local government areas.
The project operated under the Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool 2012 methodology. This method required the establishment of permanent plantings of mixed native tree species on land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years prior to commencement. The goal was to restore native vegetation cover to sequester carbon, using the Reforestation Modelling Tool (RMT) to calculate abatement rather than direct field measurement.
The Eyre Peninsula region is predominantly agricultural, characterized by extensive cereal cropping (wheat and barley) and livestock grazing (sheep for wool and meat). The environment is classified as semi-arid to Mediterranean, typically receiving between 350mm and 400mm of annual rainfall. The local terrain features calcareous sandy soils and sandy loams which can be nutrient-poor and prone to wind erosion if not carefully managed.
Notably, this project was revoked on July 31, 2018, under section 30 of the CFI Rule, which generally pertains to voluntary revocation. The project name "Nosworthy" likely refers to the landholder family, a well-known name in the South Australian agricultural sector. The proponent, Australian Integrated Carbon Financial Services Pty Ltd (AICFS), managed a portfolio of similar projects, some of which were also restructured or revoked during this period as methodologies evolved.
