Glen Russell Station

Project Information:
Glen Russell Station is a Savanna Fire Management project located approximately 28km west of Mareeba in the Tablelands region of Far North Queensland. It was registered in July 2015 and currently covers 27,558.09 hectares.
Savanna fire management projects involve the strategic and planned burning of savanna vegetation during the early dry season. By actively reducing the fuel load early in the year, proponents lower the risk, extent, and severity of unmanaged, high-intensity wild fires that typically occur during the late dry season. This methodology formally abates greenhouse gas emissions, specifically methane and nitrous oxide, across designated high and low rainfall zones.
The Mareeba and wider Tablelands region is well known for broadacre agriculture, horticulture, and cattle grazing. The area experiences a seasonal monsoonal climate, aligning with the project's high and low rainfall savanna zones. Near the local Walsh River catchment, the natural environment features diverse and often well-draining soil types, most notably sandy clay loams, yellow earthy sands, and deeper sandy loams.
There have been several administrative changes to the project since its inception. In May 2021, a variation was approved to remove specific areas from the project boundary. Additionally, the original project participant, Country Carbon Pty Limited, entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the Clean Energy Regulator in May 2020, before the formal project proponent role was transferred to Terra Carbon Pty Limited in May 2022. Beyond the generation of its 8,713 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to date, Glen Russell Station actively hosts environmental programs to control invasive Gamba grass to protect the local Walsh River catchment, and the property also accommodates local alluvial gold mining activities.
