Glen Russell Station

Project Information:

Glen Russell Station is a Savanna Fire Management project located approximately 28km west of Mareeba in the Tablelands region of Far North Queensland. Registered in July 2015, the project covers a substantial area of 27,558 hectares situated near the Walsh River and the historic Hodgkinson goldfields.

The project operates under the Savanna Fire Management methodology, which involves strategic, planned burning of savanna landscapes during the early dry season. By conducting these cooler, controlled burns, the project aims to reduce the fuel load that would otherwise feed intense, high-emission wildfires during the late dry season. This shift in fire regime reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions and protects biodiversity.

The region is characterized by a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The project area spans both high and low rainfall zones, typical of the transition from the wet tropics escarpment to the drier western tablelands. Soils in this vicinity are generally derived from metamorphic and granitic parent materials common to the Hodgkinson formation, supporting cattle grazing and native vegetation. Notably, the station has been the subject of local council efforts to control invasive Gamba grass to protect the Walsh and Mitchell river catchments.

Administrative records indicate significant changes in project management, with the proponent role transferring from Country Carbon Pty Ltd to Terra Carbon Pty Limited in May 2022. Additionally, the property has seen interest from other sectors, with public notices in 2023 indicating applications for gold mining leases involving access through the station.
