Camellia Recycling Centre (Revoked)

Project Information:
Camellia Recycling Centre (Revoked) is an Alternative Waste Treatment (AWT) project located in the industrial suburb of Camellia, New South Wales. The site is situated approximately 20km west of the Sydney CBD and roughly 4km east of Parramatta, along the banks of the Parramatta River. Registered in July 2015 and revoked in May 2019, the project was developed by Veolia Environmental Services (Australia) Pty Ltd to manage commercial and industrial waste streams.
The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Alternative Waste Treatment) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions achieved by diverting mixed solid waste from landfills, where it would otherwise generate methane, and processing it into alternative products. In this specific case, the facility was designed to process non-putrescible waste (dry commercial and industrial waste) to produce a combustible fuel substitute, often referred to as Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF), which can replace fossil fuels in industrial cement kilns.
The Camellia region is a dedicated industrial precinct known for heavy manufacturing and waste management services, rather than agricultural land uses like grazing or cropping. As part of the Sydney Basin, the area experiences a temperate climate with high rainfall. The local soil profile is heavily modified, consisting primarily of "disturbed terrain" or industrial fill, often overlying the natural alluvial clays and potential acid sulfate soils typical of the Parramatta River foreshore.
The project was voluntarily revoked in May 2019 under section 30 of the CFI Rule, meaning it is no longer generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) under this specific registration. The facility itself was designed with a capacity to process up to 200,000 tonnes of general solid waste per year, highlighting the significant scale of waste diversion intended by the proponent before the project's revocation.
