Brookton (Revoked)

Project Information:
Brookton (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located near Brookton in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 130km southeast of Perth. It was registered in July 2015 by Regenerate Australia Ltd and covers an area of 480.83 hectares.
Environmental planting projects under the 2014 Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology involve establishing permanent plantings of a mix of native tree species on land that was predominantly used for agriculture for at least five years prior to commencement. Standard requirements for this method mandate planting at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover, which typically means trees must reach a height of at least 2 meters and a crown cover of 20%.
The Brookton area is known for dryland agriculture, heavily focused on winter cropping like wheat, canola, and lupins, alongside sheep grazing. The region is considered a low to medium rainfall zone with a Mediterranean climate. Soils in the area vary significantly, ranging from sandy surface soils to heavier red-loams, often facing natural and agricultural constraints such as soil salinity and induced acidity.
This project was originally set up to establish permanent mixed-species plantings using species native to the local area. However, the project did not reach full maturity under the scheme; it was voluntarily revoked on September 18, 2017, under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011, which allows proponents to cancel their project registrations.
