Brookton (Revoked)

Project Information:
Brookton (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located near the town of Brookton in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 140km southeast of Perth. Registered in July 2015, the project encompassed a significant area of 480.83 hectares. The region is predominantly agricultural, characterized by broadacre cropping and grazing operations, though it faces significant challenges with dryland salinity, a common issue the proponent, Carbon Positive Australia, actively works to address in this specific locality.
The project operated under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology. This method involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species (either mixed-species or mallee eucalypts) on land previously clear of forest for at least five years. These projects typically require specific stocking densities (often minimums of 200–800 stems per hectare depending on the planting configuration) to ensure a forest canopy develops. The primary goal is to sequester carbon in the trees' biomass as they grow, modeled using the Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM).
Environmentally, the Brookton area experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The average annual rainfall is approximately 450mm, which places it in a medium-to-low rainfall zone suitable for specific native vegetation but challenging for water-intensive forestry. The soils in the region are variable, often consisting of sandy loams, lateritic gravels, and duplex soils (sand over clay), which can be susceptible to salinity and erosion when cleared.
The project was voluntarily revoked in September 2017 under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011. While the specific administrative reason for revocation is not detailed in the public registry, voluntary revocation often occurs when a proponent decides to restructure a project, transfer it to a different method, or shift to the voluntary carbon market. Carbon Positive Australia continues to manage other restoration sites in the Brookton area, such as their "Brookton Sandalwood" and "Brookton Saltland" projects, which focus on biodiversity and salinity mitigation outside the formal ACCU scheme.
