Project Information:

Yarraweyah (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located at the "Yarraweyah Falls" property, approximately 15km east of the town of Borden in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The project, which covers nearly 100 hectares, was registered under the Carbon Farming Initiative in July 2015 but was subsequently revoked in September 2017. The site is situated between the Stirling Range and Fitzgerald River National Parks, placing it within the significant conservation corridor known as the Gondwana Link.

The project operated under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology, which involves establishing permanent native vegetation on land previously cleared for agricultural use. The primary goal of this methodology is to sequester carbon by planting a mix of trees and shrubs native to the local area, typically at a stocking density sufficient to achieve forest cover (often exceeding 200 stems per hectare). In this specific instance, the project utilized a "Biodiverse Carbon Sink" approach, planting over 150 different species including Upland Yate and various Mallee species to restore habitat for local fauna such as the honey possum.

Regionally, the Borden area is characterized by a transition between the wheatbelt and higher rainfall zones, predominantly utilized for cropping and grazing (sheep and cattle). The environment features a Mediterranean climate with annual rainfall typically ranging between 400mm and 500mm. The local soil composition is generally described as duplex, consisting of sandy loams or gravels over clay subsoils, which can be susceptible to salinity and waterlogging, issues this revegetation project aimed to mitigate.

While the project was revoked from the Clean Energy Regulator's scheme in 2017, the restoration work continued under the management of the proponent, Carbon Positive Australia (formerly the Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund). The revocation likely indicates a shift from generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to the voluntary offset market or a charitable restoration model. The project is noted for its high biodiversity value and collaboration with partners like Threshold Environmental and the Gondwana Link to reconnect fragmented bushland.
