Bromelton Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

Bromelton Landfill Gas Project is a waste management project located at the Cleanaway Bromelton Landfill, approximately 6km west of Beaudesert in South East Queensland. Registered in May 2015, the project operates within the Bromelton State Development Area (SDA), a dedicated industrial precinct surrounded by the broader Scenic Rim region, which is historically significant for grazing, equine, and agricultural industries.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology involves installing gas collection systems, comprising wells and pipework, to capture methane generated by decomposing organic waste. This captured gas is then combusted (flared or used for energy generation) to convert the methane into carbon dioxide, significantly reducing the global warming potential of the emissions. The project covers both legacy and non-legacy waste, ensuring comprehensive gas management at the site.

Environmentally, the Beaudesert region is characterized by a subtropical climate with a marked summer-dominant rainfall pattern. The local landscape typically features heavy, cracking clay soils (Vertosols) and alluvial deposits common to the Logan River basin.

Managed by LMS Energy, Australia's largest bioenergy company, the project has successfully fulfilled its obligations under Carbon Abatement Contract CAC120527 with the Australian Government. Notably, the site has seen continued investment, with a subsequent "Bromelton Landfill Gas Upgrade Project" registered in 2023 to further enhance gas capture and combustion efficiency. The facility represents a collaboration between the landfill owner, Cleanaway, and LMS Energy to mitigate industrial emissions in a rapidly developing growth corridor.
