Bromelton Landfill Gas Project

EOP101206

Project Information:

The Bromelton Landfill Gas Project (EOP101206) is a waste sector project located in the locality of Bromelton, approximately 6 kilometers west of Beaudesert in the Scenic Rim region of Queensland. Registered by LMS Energy Pty Ltd in May 2015, the project operates within the Bromelton State Development Area, a precinct designated for major industrial activities including waste management and rail logistics. The surrounding region is traditionally agricultural, characterized by cattle grazing and cropping industries that utilize the fertile clay and alluvial soils typical of the Logan River catchment.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology involves the installation and operation of a system to collect landfill gas (biogas) generated by the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste. Instead of allowing this methane, a potent greenhouse gas, to vent into the atmosphere, the project captures it through a network of wells and pipes. The gas is then combusted, typically via a flare or an electricity generation unit, converting the methane into carbon dioxide and water, thereby significantly reducing its global warming potential.

Environmentally, the Beaudesert region experiences a subtropical climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 900mm, with the majority falling during the summer months. The project site itself is situated on the Cleanaway-owned Bromelton Landfill. While LMS Energy manages the gas capture and abatement, Cleanaway has separately proposed future developments for an "Energy from Waste" facility at the same precinct. The project has successfully participated in the Emissions Reduction Fund, securing a Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC120527) in November 2016 which has since been completed.
