Stanley Farms Mallee Plantings #2 Project (Revoked)

Project Information:
Stanley Farms Mallee Plantings #2 Project (Revoked) was a reforestation project located near Kalannie, approximately 50km northeast of Dalwallinu in the Western Australian Wheatbelt. Registered in April 2015, the project originally covered a substantial area of over 16,700 hectares, integrated into a large-scale agricultural operation. The region is characterized by broadacre cropping and sheep grazing, typical of the Central Wheatbelt's semi-arid, Mediterranean climate, which receives low winter-dominant rainfall. Soils in this area are commonly sandy loams and red clays, often requiring careful management to prevent salinity, a key driver for the adoption of mallee plantings in the region.
The project operated under the Carbon Farming Initiative using the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This method involves establishing permanent plantings of mallee eucalypt species, often arranged in belts or "alleys" to allow continued farming between rows while providing windbreaks and combatting soil salinity. The project was successfully contracted to the Australian Government, completing its contract obligations in January 2017. However, the project area underwent significant variations later that year, and the project was ultimately revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule in May 2025, a provision typically used for voluntary revocations. The landholder, Stanley Farms, is well-regarded in the sector for pioneering the integration of oil mallees into dryland farming systems.
