Sunday Morning Hills Revegetation

Project Information:

Sunday Morning Hills Revegetation is an environmental planting project located in Brenanah, Victoria, approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Bendigo. Registered in March 2015, the project covers 171.69 hectares of land situated within the Loddon Shire. The site, known as "Sunday Morning Hills," sits in the shadow of the Kooyoora State Park and is part of the region's significant Box-Ironbark country.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology. This involves establishing permanent native forests on land that was previously cleared for agriculture, in this case, grazing. The methodology requires planting species native to the local area at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover. Carbon credits are calculated using the FullCAM model, which estimates the biomass stored in the trees and debris over time.

The Brenanah region is characterized by a temperate to semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450-500mm. The landscape is typical of the Victorian Goldfields, often featuring stony, skeletal soils on ridgelines and clay or loam soils in the flats. The land historically supported sheep grazing but was described as "clapped out" prior to Greenfleet's acquisition.

Greenfleet, a non-profit organization, utilized direct seeding to establish over 120,000 trees across the property, mimicking natural regeneration better than seedling planting. The site now serves as a biodiverse habitat connecting to the adjacent state park, supporting wildlife such as the Yellow-footed Antechinus and various reptile species.
