Niemuroo Revegetation (Revoked)

Project Information:

Niemuroo Revegetation (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, situated approximately 40km west of Moulamein and 50km north of Swan Hill. The project area spans 561.75 hectares along the banks of the Niemur River, an anabranch of the Murray River. It was registered in March 2015 by the proponent Greenfleet Australia.

The project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology, which involves establishing permanent native forests on land previously cleared for agriculture. Specifically, this project targeted the restoration of River Red Gum forests and mixed native species on land that had been used for cereal cropping and wool production for over five years prior to commencement. The methodology generally requires planting at densities sufficient to achieve forest cover (typically over 200 stems per hectare) using species endemic to the local area.

Environmentally, the region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with rainfall averaging between 300mm and 400mm annually. The terrain consists of riverine plains with soil types ranging from heavy grey clays to red-brown earths, typical of the Murray-Darling Basin.

The project was voluntarily revoked in January 2018 under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. As the proponent is Greenfleet, a non-profit organization focused on ecosystem restoration, this revocation suggests the forest remains protected under a carbon covenant or conservation agreement but no longer generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for the compliance market. The site is noted for its high biodiversity value, providing habitat for the threatened Bush Stone-curlew and complementing the nearby Werai Indigenous Protected Area.
