Claymore Native Forest Protection Project
EOP101107
Project Information:
Claymore Native Forest Protection Project is an Avoided Deforestation project located in the Brewarrina Shire, approximately 90km north-west of Nyngan, New South Wales. Registered in March 2015, the project protects 1,827 hectares of native forest that was historically approved for clearing. The project is managed by Terra Carbon Pty Limited, a subsidiary of the environmental markets developer GreenCollar.
The region surrounding the project is situated within the semi-arid mulga lands of western NSW, an area predominantly used for livestock grazing and agriculture. The landscape typically features red earth and clay soils (Vertosols and Chromosols) which support native woodlands but are susceptible to erosion if over-cleared.
The project operates under the Avoided Deforestation 1.1 methodology. This method is designed for landholders who hold a distinct clearing permit (specifically an Invasive Native Scrub Property Vegetation Plan) issued before July 1, 2010. By surrendering the right to clear this land for agriculture, the project generates carbon credits by maintaining the carbon stored in the trees.
Landholder Barry Archer utilized the revenue from this carbon project to fund property improvements, including exclusion fencing and new water infrastructure. These upgrades help manage grazing pressure and fire risks while diversifying the farm's income stream beyond traditional livestock production.
