Glenrose Native Forest Protection Project

Project Information:

Glenrose Native Forest Protection Project is an Avoided Deforestation project located on the 'Glenrose' property, approximately 30km east of the major mining town of Cobar in Central West New South Wales. Registered in March 2015, the project covers 2,865 hectares of native woodland situated between Cobar and the locality of Canbelego. The region acts as a transitional zone between the sheep-wheat belt and the semi-arid rangelands, with land use primarily focused on grazing merino sheep, goats, and cattle on large pastoral leases.

Avoided Deforestation projects involve protecting native forest that was historically approved for clearing. To be eligible under the 'Avoided Deforestation 1.1' methodology, the landholder must hold a clearing consent (such as an Invasive Native Scrub Property Vegetation Plan) issued before 1 July 2010. By voluntarily forfeiting the right to clear this land for agriculture, the project generates carbon credits equivalent to the emissions that would have been released had the forest been removed.

The Cobar Peneplain region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 390mm. The landscape features rolling downs and low hills with red earth and skeletal lithosol soils. The native vegetation protected by this project likely consists of Invasive Native Scrub (INS) species common to the area, such as Mulga (Acacia aneura), Bimble Box (Eucalyptus populnea), and White Cypress Pine.

The project is managed by Terra Carbon Pty Limited, a subsidiary of the GreenCollar Group, and operates under a 100-year permanence period, ensuring the forest remains protected until at least 2115.
