Moquilambo Native Forest Protection Project

Project Information:

Moquilambo Native Forest Protection Project is an Avoided Deforestation project located approximately 30km north of Cobar in the Orana region of New South Wales. Registered in February 2015, the project covers a substantial area of 13,971 hectares on Moquilambo Station. The property is a working pastoral station situated within the Cobar Peneplain bioregion, an area heavily utilized for rangeland grazing, particularly for Merino sheep and goats.

The project operates under the Avoided Deforestation 1.1 methodology. This specific carbon farming method targets native forest areas where the landholder held a valid clearing permit (often an Invasive Native Scrub Property Vegetation Plan) issued before 1 July 2010. By voluntarily surrendering the right to clear this vegetation for agricultural expansion, typically to create cropping or grazing land, the project generates carbon credits based on the emissions prevented. The proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited, is a subsidiary of the major environmental markets developer GreenCollar.

Environmental conditions in this region are semi-arid, characterized by hot summers and variable rainfall averaging around 390mm annually. The landscape consists of undulating plains with red earth and lithosol soils. The vegetation protected by this project likely includes native species common to the area such as Mulga, Bimble Box, Coolibah, and Turpentine. By retaining this forest cover, the project not only sequesters carbon but also provides critical habitat for local biodiversity, including species like the Australian Bustard and various dunnarts, while operating alongside the property's existing wool-growing enterprise.
