Conways Station (Revoked)

Project Information:

Conways Station (Revoked) was a Savanna Fire Management project located on the Conways Station pastoral lease in the Roper Gulf region of the Northern Territory. The project area, covering approximately 96,866 hectares, is situated roughly 180km east of the major regional hub of Katherine and borders Arnhem Land and Kakadu National Park. Registered in January 2015 and revoked in September 2023, the project was originally managed by Country Carbon Pty Ltd before transferring to Conway Country Corp Pty Ltd.

The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Emissions Abatement through Savanna Fire Management) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology involves strategic fire management aimed at shifting the burning regime from late dry season (LDS) wildfires, which are typically high-intensity and emit significant greenhouse gases, to early dry season (EDS) planned burns. By conducting controlled burns when vegetation is still moist and weather conditions are cooler, the project aimed to create firebreaks that limit the spread of destructive late-season fires, thereby reducing overall emissions.

The Conways Station property lies within the high rainfall zone of Northern Australia, receiving an average annual rainfall exceeding 1000mm. The landscape is characterized by tropical savanna vegetation, featuring a mix of black soil plains, red tippera soils, escarpments, and river systems. The region is primarily used for pastoral cattle grazing, with the property notably holding organic certification and managing a population of wild buffalo alongside its cattle herd.

The project was voluntarily revoked under Section 29 of the CFI Rule in late 2023. This revocation coincided with the sale of the station to Wealthcheck and Viridios Capital, a group focused on carbon asset management. During its active registration period, the project was issued 34,796 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). The timing of the revocation and subsequent sale suggests the new owners may intend to register a new project under a more recent methodology to optimize carbon sequestration and abatement potential.
