Conways Station (Revoked)

Project Information:

Conways Station (Revoked) was a Savanna Fire Management project located on the Conways pastoral lease in the Roper Gulf region of the Northern Territory. The project area, covering approximately 96,866 hectares, sits roughly 140km southeast of Katherine (approx. 180km by road) and shares borders with Arnhem Land and Kakadu National Park. Registered in January 2015, the project operated for over eight years before being voluntarily revoked in September 2023.

The project utilized the 2015 Savanna Fire Management methodology, specifically designed for high rainfall zones (receiving over 1000mm of annual precipitation). The core activity involved conducting strategic, planned burns during the early dry season (typically before August) to reduce fuel loads. This practice aims to limit the intensity and spread of late dry season wildfires, thereby reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions. The region is characterized by a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, and the landscape features a mix of black soil plains, red Tippera soils (Kandosols), and rugged escarpments.

The project's revocation in late 2023 coincided with the sale of the station to new owners, Viridios Capital and Wealthcheck. While the property has historically been used for cattle grazing and buffalo harvesting, the station was marketed with significant emphasis on its carbon potential. Interesting local features include a large population of wild buffalo and significant river systems including the Waterhouse River. Prior to revocation, the project had issued over 34,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
