Astrea Station

Project Information:

Astrea Station is a Savanna Fire Management project located in the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland, situated approximately 110km south of the township of Coen and 60km west of the Musgrave Roadhouse. The project was originally registered in September 2014 and covers a project area of approximately 62,765 hectares.

Savanna Fire Management projects in the high rainfall zone involve strategic, planned burning of savanna areas during the cooler "early dry season" (typically prior to August). This controlled burning reduces the fuel load, consisting of grass and other vegetation, thereby preventing large-scale, high-intensity wildfires during the "late dry season." By shifting the fire regime to cooler, less intense fires, the project reduces the emission of greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide.

The region is characterized by a tropical monsoonal climate falling within the high rainfall zone (receiving over 1000mm annually), with distinct wet and dry seasons. The landscape features eucalyptus-wooded savannas with soils ranging from sandy loams to clayey sands. The primary land use in this area is cattle grazing, with the property historically operating as a cattle station running Brahman cattle alongside its carbon farming activities.

An interesting aspect of this project is its recent change in management. The property was held by the Gordon family for over 37 years before being listed for sale in 2022. Following this period, the project proponent role transferred from the aggregator Terra Carbon Pty Limited to S.C. Browning Pty Ltd in March 2025, suggesting a transition in ownership or direct management capability.
