Nullawarra Station #2 Native Forest Protection Project

Project Information:

Nullawarra Station #2 Native Forest Protection Project is an Avoided Deforestation project located approximately 35km southwest of the major outback town of Cobar in western New South Wales. Registered in June 2014, the project covers a substantial area of 10,413 hectares within the Cobar Peneplain bioregion.

Avoided Deforestation projects under the Carbon Farming Initiative are distinct because they protect native forest that already held a government-issued clearing permit prior to July 1, 2010. By choosing not to exercise this permit to clear the land for agriculture, typically for grazing or cropping, the project proponent generates carbon credits (ACCUs) by preventing the emissions that would have resulted from the decomposition and burning of the forest biomass.

The region surrounding Nullawarra Station is defined by a semi-arid climate with a median annual rainfall of approximately 390mm, though this is highly variable. The landscape is dominated by rangeland grazing, primarily for sheep and cattle, and is characterized by its red earth soils (massive red earths and red chromosols) and vegetation often referred to as "invasive native scrub" (INS) by local graziers.

An interesting note regarding this project is the existence of a sister project, the "Nullawarra Station Native Forest Protection Project" (Project ID EOP100562), which suggests the station's carbon activities were split into multiple phases or areas. Additionally, the project has undergone administrative variations, including a methodology update in 2015 to the 1.1 version and a participant name change in 2021 to reflect the current proponent structure of David Harrison and Trictor Investments.
