Carbon Conscious Carbon Capture Project 2

Project Information:

Carbon Conscious Carbon Capture Project 2 is a permanent mallee planting project located across 21 properties in the Central and Northern Agricultural Regions of Western Australia, spanning local government areas such as Moora, Mullewa, Northampton, and Perenjori. It was registered in June 2014 and originally covered 12,938.89 hectares, though subsequent project remapping and variations adjusted the active crediting area to approximately 9,861 hectares.

Permanent mallee planting projects involve establishing native mallee eucalypt species on land previously cleared and used for agricultural purposes. Projects under this methodology require maintaining the forest at a sufficient density to achieve permanent canopy cover for a 100-year permanence period, sequestering carbon which is measured and modelled using the FullCAM tool.

The Western Australian Wheatbelt and Mid West regions are predominantly known for dryland broadacre cropping and sheep grazing. The area experiences a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with low to moderate rainfall, and the region's sandy loams and duplex soils are highly suited for deep-rooted native mallee tree species.

This project was established with over 13 million native trees, including Eucalyptus kochii, Eucalyptus polybractea, and Eucalyptus loxophleba, planted between 2009 and 2012. In April 2021, Cyclone Seroja crossed the Western Australian coast and impacted six of the project's properties; however, the structural damage to the trees was minimal and acted as a beneficial natural thinning event. The Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) generated by this project have been widely used in the voluntary market, supporting the carbon-neutral claims of prominent entities including the City of Adelaide and Charter Hall Group.
