Woy Woy Landfill Gas Abatement Facility

EOP100584

Project Information:

Woy Woy Landfill Gas Abatement Facility is an electricity generation from landfill gas project located at Woy Woy, approximately 15km south of Gosford on the Central Coast in NSW. It was registered in August 2013 and covers an unknown area.

Electricity generation from landfill gas projects involve installing and operating gas collection systems to capture methane emissions from decomposing organic waste. Instead of venting into the atmosphere, the captured gas is combusted in an engine to generate renewable electricity.

The Woy Woy and Central Coast area is known for coastal residential development, estuaries, and significant native bushland reserves. The area experiences a coastal temperate climate with high rainfall, and the low-lying soils are predominantly estuarine sandy soils, known locally as Woy Woy soils, which are characterised by permanently high water tables.

This project transitioned from a revoked legacy method and continues to capture gas generated at the landfill from both legacy and non-legacy waste. The project was originally contracted to the Commonwealth in April 2015 by AGL Energy Services Pty Limited to deliver 130,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). This contract was successfully completed in June 2022. In November 2023, the project proponent was officially updated from AGL Energy Services Pty Ltd to LMS Energy Pty Ltd.
