Tram, Wedderburn

Project Information:
Tram, Wedderburn is a permanent mixed-species environmental planting project located near Wedderburn in Victoria, approximately 75km northwest of the major regional city of Bendigo. It was registered in March 2014 and covers an area of 258.27 hectares.
Environmental planting projects involve planting native trees at a density of at least 200 stems per hectare to establish permanent forest cover. This specific project operates under the 2014 Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology, having varied its method from the 2012 Mallee Plantings RMT method in December 2015.
The Wedderburn area is historically famous for the 1850s gold rush, but the region's current land use is predominantly agricultural, strongly supporting sheep grazing and cropping operations. The local environment features a dry, temperate Mediterranean climate with relatively low to moderate rainfall. The regional soils generally consist of a mixture of clay and stone that can be challenging to manage, but historically supported the dense native box-ironbark forests characteristic of central Victoria.
This project is managed by Greenfleet Australia and establishes permanent plantings of local native tree species on land that was heavily used for agriculture for at least five years prior to the project's commencement. By returning this agricultural land to its natural forested state, the project helps sequester carbon while restoring vital habitat for local wildlife.
