Cedars Road Landfill Gas Extraction and Combustion

Project Information:

Cedars Road Landfill Gas Extraction and Combustion is a landfill gas extraction project located at the Cedars Road Waste Management Facility in South Bingera, approximately 16km southwest of Bundaberg, Queensland. It was registered in February 2014 and covers the footprint of the active and legacy waste cells at the regional landfill site.

Landfill gas and electricity generation projects involve the installation of gas collection pipelines within the waste mass to capture biogas, primarily methane, as the waste decomposes over time. The captured gas is then combusted in a flaring system or used to generate dispatchable renewable electricity, significantly reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

The South Bingera and broader Bundaberg area is well known for agricultural land uses, predominantly sugarcane farming, horticulture, macadamia orchards, and beef cattle grazing. The region experiences a humid subtropical climate with high, summer-dominant rainfall averaging around 1,000mm to 1,100mm annually. Soils along the local alluvial plains and undulating terrain range from fertile red volcanic basalt soils to alluvial cracking clays and loams.

This project was originally set up by the Bundaberg Regional Council and later transitioned to a partnership with the current proponent, LGI Limited. It operates at the region's flagship fully-lined landfill, which was constructed with a multi-layered composite lining system designed to securely manage the community's waste up to the year 2051. The generation of ACCUs has been crucial in funding the infrastructure, making this regional carbon abatement operation commercially viable.
