Cedars Road Landfill Gas Extraction and Combustion

Project Information:

Cedars Road Landfill Gas Extraction and Combustion is a landfill gas project located at the Bundaberg Regional Landfill in South Bingera, approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Bundaberg, Queensland. Registered in February 2014, the project operates on the site of a major regional waste facility. The surrounding region of South Bingera and the broader Wide Bay-Burnett area is heavily utilized for agriculture, particularly sugarcane cultivation, horticulture, and grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology credits the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions achieved by capturing methane-rich gas generated from decomposing waste and converting it into carbon dioxide through combustion. While the project is registered under the "Electricity Generation" method, the proponent, LGI Limited, has historically focused on flaring the gas to destroy methane. In 2023, LGI announced plans to investigate upgrading the site to generate dispatchable renewable energy, leveraging the gas for power generation rather than just abatement.

Environmentally, the Bundaberg region is characterized by a subtropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall. The local terrain typically consists of alluvial soils ranging from sandy loams to clays, which support the region's extensive agricultural output. The landfill itself manages waste from the Bundaberg Regional Council area, serving as a critical piece of local infrastructure.

Historically, this project was originally registered by the Bundaberg Regional Council before transferring to LGI Limited (formerly Landfill Gas Industries) in 2015. It has successfully transitioned through multiple methodology iterations, starting with the original Carbon Farming Initiative legacy waste methods. A notable achievement for the project was the completion of a Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC333101) with the Australian Government, which secured the delivery of 202,246 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by September 2021.
