Kulki Carbon Farming Project

Project Information:

Kulki Carbon Farming Project is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth project located approximately 100km west of Dirranbandi in southern Queensland. It was registered in July 2014 and covers 3,609.72 ha.

Native Forest from Managed Regrowth projects involve regenerating native forest by ceasing the mechanical or chemical destruction of regrowth on land previously cleared for pastoral use. The method also requires landholders to carefully manage the timing and extent of livestock grazing to ensure the native vegetation can reach full forest cover without being suppressed.

The Dirranbandi area within the Balonne Shire is a prominent agricultural region known for large-scale dryland cattle and sheep grazing, alongside irrigated cropping. The region generally experiences a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall between 400mm and 600mm. Soils in the area typically feature a mix of grey clays, clay loams, and texture contrast soils that naturally support native coolibah and belah woodlands.

This project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers. Originally established by Devine Agribusiness Carbon, the project and the broader 22,884 ha Kulki pastoral property were recently acquired by Pastoral Partners Australia, an investment fund that integrates sustainable livestock operations alongside high-integrity carbon farming. Under its current ownership, the Kulki project helps fulfill an active carbon abatement contract with the Australian Government, delivering a fixed obligation of over 164,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
