Kulki Carbon Farming Project

Project Information:

The Kulki Carbon Farming Project is a native forest regeneration project located on the "Kulki" pastoral station, approximately 80km south of Bollon and 60km northwest of Hebel in the Balonne region of Southern Queensland. Registered in July 2014, the project covers 3,609 hectares of land historically used for grazing. The region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450mm. The landscape typically features red earth soils supporting vegetation such as Mulga, Poplar Box, and Cypress Pine, which are common in the Mulga Lands bioregion.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Native Forest from Managed Regrowth) Methodology Determination 2013. This methodology involves regenerating native forest on land that has previously been cleared for pastoral purposes. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the project proponent must cease mechanical or chemical suppression of regrowth and manage grazing pressure to allow the forest to reach maturity. This specific project focuses on assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers, ensuring the return of endemic species.

Originally managed by Devine Agribusiness Carbon, the project proponent changed to Pastoral Partners Australia Trusco Pty Limited in December 2023. The project is also associated with the Wilga Farming portfolio, which manages mixed farmland assets focusing on productivity and natural capital. Since its registration, the project has undergone variations, including an expansion of the project area in late 2014.
