Wonga/Templemore Methane Digestion Ponds

Project Information:

Wonga/Templemore Methane Digestion Ponds is a piggery manure methane destruction project located roughly 5km northwest of Young in the South West Slopes region of NSW. It was registered in January 2014 and covers an unknown area across the proponent's farming properties.

Destruction of methane from piggery manure projects involve capturing biogas emitted from decomposing effluent in covered anaerobic lagoons and combusting it via a flare or generator. Standard requirements for this methodology involve establishing a baseline of historical manure management and continuously metering the flow and methane concentration of the biogas sent to the combustion device to calculate the exact carbon abatement.

The Young area is historically well known for mixed farming enterprises, intensive livestock, and stone fruit or cherry orchards. The area is considered a moderate rainfall zone, typically receiving around 600mm annually, and soils are generally highly productive red-brown earths and clay loams.

This project collects and combusts methane generated from piggery manure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Wonga and Templemore piggeries. It has successfully delivered on two fixed-delivery Australian Government Carbon Abatement Contracts (CAC293698 and CAC663619). The proponent, Windridge Farms, is a large family-owned agricultural enterprise that manages over 5,100 hectares, integrating an intensive production of 4,000 sows alongside 1,000 head of cattle, 8,000 breeding ewes, and broadacre cropping.
