Project Information:

Tipperary Group of Stations Savanna Burning Project is a large-scale savanna fire management project located approximately 55km south of Adelaide River and 36km east of the Daly River township in the Northern Territory. Registered in July 2013, the project covers a massive 381,440 hectares within the famous Tipperary Station, a property renowned for its sheer scale and history.

The project operates under the savanna burning methodology, which involves strategic "cool" burning during the early dry season (typically April to July). By conducting planned, low-intensity burns when vegetation still holds moisture, the project reduces the fuel load that would otherwise feed uncontrollable, high-intensity wildfires in the late dry season. This shift in fire timing significantly lowers emissions of methane and nitrous oxide.

The Victoria Daly region is characterized by a tropical monsoonal climate with distinct wet and dry seasons and high annual rainfall, often exceeding 1,200mm. The landscape supports extensive cattle grazing and emerging cotton crops, underpinned by soils that vary from productive red earths (Kandosols) and sandy loams to cracking clays on the floodplains.

Tipperary Station itself is an iconic Australian property, historically known for its development by entrepreneur Warren Anderson, including the construction of a private zoo and a runway capable of landing jet aircraft. More recently, the station served as the primary filming location for the Netflix drama series Territory (fictionalized as "Marianne Station"). The project proponent, Tipperary Group of Stations Pty Ltd, is associated with prominent barrister Allan Myers, whose Dunkeld Pastoral Co. was previously listed as a participant in the project before a variation in 2024.
