Project Information:

Tipperary Group of Stations Savanna Burning Project is a savanna fire management project located on the massive Tipperary Station, approximately 190km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Registered in July 2013, the project operates across a vast area of over 381,000 hectares near the Daly River and Adelaide River townships.

The region is characterized by a tropical monsoonal climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The area falls within the high rainfall zone (typically receiving over 1000mm annually), supporting vegetation growth that becomes highly flammable during the dry season. The landscape features diverse soil types, primarily Red Kandosols (red earths) and fertile floodplains (Hydrosols) associated with the Litchfield and Daly River systems. The land is actively used for large-scale cattle grazing, fodder production, and cropping.

The project employs the "Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Early Dry Season Savanna Burning" methodology. This involves conducting strategic, cool burns during the early dry season (typically April to July) to reduce the fuel load. By doing so, the project aims to prevent larger, higher-intensity wildfires that occur in the late dry season, thereby avoiding significant greenhouse gas emissions.

Tipperary Station itself is a high-profile pastoral lease owned by prominent barrister Allan Myers. It is one of the largest cattle stations in Australia and recently gained pop-culture fame as the filming location for the Netflix series Territory.
